A copy of ‘First Rhyme Mom’ was kindly gifted to me by the Author Leanne Stoneley
About the author
Leanne Stoneley was brought up and now lives in the West Midlands, UK, with her husband and baby daughter.
First Rhyme Mom is the first in her series of poetry collections, inspired by first-hand by being a first-time mom. This is her debut book.
When Leanne approached me to ask me if I wanted to review her book, I have to be honest and admit I was a little apprehensive. I haven’t really read any poetry since it was compulsory at school.
I’m delighted to say that I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this book.
First Rhyme Mom has been on my bedside table for a short while now and has become my vice for when parenting becomes just a little too much. When my children are (naturally) trying to wind each other up, and inevitably arguing over a chair or something else just as inane- First Rhyme Mom has become a slice of parenting solace. It reminds me that as parents, we’re all in this together. The poem ‘Motherhood’ encapsulates this perfectly.
With Sacrifices made and not being paid,
you may question if the bad outweighs the good,
The love you’re rewarded with answers this.
Welcome to Motherhood.
My personal favourite poems from the book are ‘OMG (Ode to needing a wee)’ and ‘Baby Brain’.
Which of us Mum’s can honestly say he hadn’t nearly weed ourselves whilst being pregnant (every time I sneezed, personally), or like me, put milk in the cupboard rather than in the fridge thanks to baby brain?
If you’re looking for a collection of witty, heart-wrenching and relatable motherhood poems, make sure you get yourself your own copy of First Rhyme Mom.
